How to Avoid Burnout While Running an Online Business

avoid burnoutRunning your own business has always been challenging. But today’s online business owner has an additional challenge… their “office” is integrated with everything they do. Pick up your phone to check the weather, and there’s work. Pull out your phone to calculate the tip for dinner, and there’s work. You have an endless list of tasks to do and you can’t get away from them. Not only are you managing client expectations and handling daily operations, but then there is managing homelife. If you’re like most of my clients, it probably feels like you’re spinning multiple plates at once and they’re all wobbling – and something is about to drop. The constant stress can lead to one of the biggest threats to your success: burnout.

Having an autoimmune disease, I know I can’t overdo it or I risk triggering an autoimmune flair. Yet, when I feel the plates wobbling my instinct is to keep working to try to get it all done. That is the survival instinct kicking in. Just like you have to fight against the survival instinct to consume calories when dieting, you have to fight against the survival instinct to just keep pushing through.

Can you relate to the constant pressure of things to do?

This blog post is here to help you navigate your way out. We’ll explore practical strategies and proven tips to prevent burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance. By the end of this post, you’ll have a clear roadmap to avoid burnout and keep your business thriving without sacrificing your well-being.

Let’s dive in.

Set Boundaries: Separate Work and Personal Life

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for preventing burnout. Research by the American Psychological Association indicates that a lack of work-life balance can significantly increase stress levels, negatively impacting both mental and physical health.

A balanced approach allows you to recharge, bringing renewed energy and focus to your work. When you allow yourself time to relax and disconnect from work, you can return to your tasks with greater efficiency and creativity.

Here are three ways you can set boundaries:

  • Designate specific work hours and stick to them. Before anyone else will respect your off time you have to. By setting these boundaries, you create a structured environment that promotes productivity and reduces stress. And you know the old adage… the time it takes to complete a task expands to fill the time available. Consider setting up an “off work” focus time on your phone where you can block work apps.
  • Create a dedicated workspace. When working from home, it can be tempting to blur the lines between work and leisure. Especially using the same computer and phone for work and home life. But you can train your brain that it’s work time by consistently working at the same time. Having a separate area for work helps you mentally switch gears and maintain focus. According to a study by the International Labour Organization, having a designated workspace can increase productivity by up to 30%. Also, consider putting work apps in a folder so they aren’t mixed in with apps you use after work.
  • Communicate your boundaries to family and friends. I frequently hear clients complain about family not respecting their work hours yet 95% of the time they haven’t ever made a request for them to not call during work hours. Let them know your hours and when they can expect a response. This ensures that those around you understand and respect your work time, reducing interruptions and distractions. This practice not only benefits your productivity but also helps maintain healthy relationships with your loved ones.

Prioritize Self-Care

Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for preventing burnout. Regular exercise, meditation, and engaging in hobbies are powerful tools for reducing stress and promoting overall well-being. According to the World Health Organization, regular physical activity can reduce the risk of depression and anxiety by up to 30%.

Getting enough sleep and maintaining a balanced diet are also crucial aspects of self-care. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that adults need at least seven hours of sleep per night for optimal health and well-being. Lack of sleep can lead to increased stress levels, impaired cognitive function, and a higher risk of burnout. Similarly, a balanced diet provides the necessary nutrients to support your body and mind, helping you maintain energy levels and focus throughout the day.

Beyond physical health, self-care involves scheduling time for activities that help you relax and recharge. Whether it’s reading, enjoying nature, or engaging in a hobby, these activities offer a valuable break from work-related stress. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that enjoyable activities can reduce stress and improve mood by up to 60%. Prioritizing self-care enhances your well-being and equips you to handle the demands of running an online business more effectively.

Implement Effective Time Management

Effective time management is crucial for maintaining productivity without overworking. And one of the best ways to manage your time successfully is by understanding your priorities.

According to a study by McKinsey Global Institute, workers who prioritize their tasks effectively are 25% more productive than those who don’t.

I hear from new clients all the time that they don’t know what to work on next. In our hyper connected digital world it’s so easy to be overwhelmed by all we can be doing. One of my favorite ways to prioritize is by doing my simple Productivity Reset exercise. Start by making a list of everything bouncing around in your head that you have to do. Add to it anything in email or messaging apps. Add anything that is from papers on your desk. You should have one long list that captures everything. Next start scrutinizing the list. What can you let go of and not do? What can you delegate? What can you just put off until later? Indicate on the list. Then you are left with the things that must get done. Now you want to schedule them. First procrastinate what you can to next month or next week. Then for the items that must be done this week identify the day they will be done. Now take out a sheet of paper for today’s list and make two sections; deep tasks and shallow tasks. Write today’s tasks in one of those sections.

Planning your day the night before you can start your workday with a sense of direction and purpose (and be less likely to lose an hour scrolling social media in the morning). According to a survey by LinkedIn, professionals who plan their days in advance report feeling 20% more productive and less stressed. By implementing these time management techniques, you can enhance your efficiency and prevent burnout.

Delegate Tasks

Delegation is a powerful tool for reducing your workload and preventing burnout. Identifying tasks that can be outsourced or handled by team members allows you to focus on high-impact activities. According to a study by Harvard Business Review, leaders who delegate tasks effectively have teams that are 33% more efficient. By sharing responsibilities, you can reduce stress and improve overall productivity.

When delegating tasks, it’s important to provide clear instructions and expectations. This ensures that team members understand their responsibilities and can complete tasks efficiently. According to a study by Gallup, managers who delegate effectively are more likely to have engaged and high-performing teams. By empowering your team and trusting them with responsibilities, you not only reduce your own workload but also contribute to the long-term success of your team and business.

Take Regular Breaks

Taking regular breaks is essential for maintaining productivity and preventing burnout. The science behind breaks shows that they help refresh your mind and improve focus. A study by the Draugiem Group found that employees who take short breaks are 17% more productive than those who don’t.

Short breaks throughout the day can provide a mental reset, allowing you to return to your tasks with renewed energy. Techniques such as the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for a set period followed by a short break, can be highly effective. According to research by DeskTime, the most productive employees work for 52 minutes and then take a 17-minute break. This rhythm helps maintain focus and productivity while preventing burnout.

Longer breaks, such as lunch breaks or time off during weekends, are equally important. They provide an opportunity to disconnect from work and recharge. According to a study by the University of Illinois, taking regular vacations can reduce the risk of burnout by 25%. These breaks help you return to work with a fresh perspective and increased motivation.

Build a Support Network

Surrounding yourself with mentors, peers, and professional groups who understand your challenges can help you navigate tough times. According to a study by Stanford University, having a supportive network can improve business performance by up to 20%. Sharing experiences and advice can prevent feelings of isolation and provide fresh perspectives on problem-solving.

Peers and colleagues who understand your industry can provide emotional support and encouragement. Sharing challenges and successes with others who face similar situations can be incredibly reassuring. According to a survey by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), social support can reduce stress levels by 30%. By fostering a strong support network, you can build resilience against burnout and create a more collaborative and positive work environment.

Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools for reducing stress and preventing burnout. These practices help you stay present, reduce anxiety, and improve mental clarity. A study by Harvard Medical School found that regular meditation can reduce the symptoms of anxiety by up to 45%.

Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. This practice can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, allowing you to respond to stressors more calmly.

Meditation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises and guided meditations, can provide a sense of calm and relaxation. These practices can be easily integrated into your daily routine, whether through dedicated meditation sessions or brief mindfulness breaks throughout the day.
